Why might my IVC filter need removal?

The IVC filter is a small piece of metal made of nitinol or stainless steel that can be placed into the Inferior Vena Cava. Most of the time, the IVC filter is placed in order to prevent a blockage in the vessel of the leg called a pulmonary embolism.

The UVC filter is placed by a vascular surgeon or an interventional radiologist through a small incision in a vein in your groin or neck, in order to prevent pulmonary embolism. The procedure is usually easy, and completed within one hour.

However, a few manufacturers of IVC filters have been recently issued a warning letter from the FDA for presenting higher rates of relative risk for death, filter fracture and movement, such as Bard G2 IVC filter or Cook IVC filter. Indeed, confidential reports showed in 2015 that some medical device giants such as C.R. Bard or Cook Medical were associated with 27 deaths and hundreds of problems with their IVC filters. Instead of recalling the deficient filters, the manufacturers decided to keep them on the market, creating more and more life-threatening situations.

The main problem of deficient filters are the fracture or the tilting of the filter, which can create several vascular symptoms:

  • Perforation of the heart, lungs or other organs
  • Hemorrhagic pericardial effusion
  • Cardiac tamponade
  • Ventricular tachycardia
  • Puncturing of the vena cava

As a faulty IVC filter can have disastrous consequences, the problems requires emergency treatment, and most of the time removal or even heart surgery for the worst cases. Shamis & Gentile P.A. knows how difficult it is to face medical conditions related to IVC filter complications, and our law firm is often called in South Florida to settle cases that other law firms may not be able to handle on their own, such as IVC filter claims.
