Why might I need an IVC filter?

An IVC filter, also called Inferior Vena Cava filter, is a small cone-shaped device that is implemented in the inferior vena cava just below the kidneys. The inferior vena cava is the largest vein in the body, and carries de-oxygenated blood from the lower extremities to the right atrium of the heart, and finally to the lungs.

Veins are the blood vessels that bring oxygen-poor blood back to the heart, while arteries are the blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood and nutrients to the body. A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep inside the body. In most cases, the clot forms inside one of the deep veins of the leg. Frequently, those veins have tiny valves that help to keep blood moving back up toward the heart;  a DVT may damage one of these valves, causing a blockage in the vessel called a pulmonary embolism.

The IVC filter is placed by a vascular surgeon or an interventional radiologist through a small incision in a vein in your groin or neck, in order to prevent pulmonary embolism. A variety of conditions can increase your chance of getting a DVT, among which:

  • Recent surgery, which decreases your mobility
