What are the risks of a deficient IVC filter?

An Inferior Vena Cava filter (also called IVC filter), is a small medical device implemented in the inferior vena cava. The inferior vena cava is the largest vein in the body, and carries de-oxygenated blood from the lower extremities to the right atrium of the heart, and finally to the lungs.

The UVC filter is placed by a vascular surgeon or an interventional radiologist in order to capture blood clot that had broken loose from one of the deep veins in the legs on its way to the heart and lungs. Without the IVC filter, there would be a potential risk for the blood clot to cause a blockage of the pulmonary artery.

Until recently, IVC filters were available only as permanently implanted devices. Now, most IVC filters can be removed when the risk of clot travelling to the lungs has passed. However, it also happens that the IVC filter fractures and causes major complications. One of the most common complaint is that some broken filter components migrate through the patient’s body, causing major injuries to the internal organs.

A few manufacturers of IVC filters have been recently issued a warning letter from the FDA for presenting higher rates of relative risk for death, filter fracture and movement, such as Bard G2 IVC filter or Cook IVC filter.

The migration of the filter can create several vascular symptoms that could lead to the removal of the defective IVC filter:

  • Perforation of the heart, lungs or other organs
  • Hemorrhagic pericardial effusion
  • Cardiac tamponade
  • Ventricular tachycardia
  • Puncturing of the vena cava

Most of the time, a defective IVC filter requires emergency treatment and the blood clot filter needs to be removed. In the worst case scenario, a heart surgery can be required. Shamis & Gentile P.A. is one of the rare law firms in South Florida to be able to settle cases related to IVC filter claims. Our trusted and progressive injury lawsuit attorneys can help you obtain the compensation you deserve.
